African Americans Debate Enlistment (1898), Module 5

Thousands of African Americans troops served in the Spanish American and Philippine American wars.

With that being said it was confronted with racial violence and discrimination at homes, they did so with a

mix of hope, satisfaction, and disappointment. Some of the men seem enthusiastic over the idea of

enlisting in defense of the government, while some are more reserved and common-sensed, asserting that

no colored man should never again offer his services to protect a government that does not protect him.

The government of the United States was not responsible nor a good leader because moat of the loyal

citizens were either burned or shot to death, like dogs, with protection. The government also ignored their

rights and claims and acted like they were all at peace and happiness. Such injustices is not tolerated by

any other civilized nation; not even in Spain guilty of such discriminations among her own citizens. As a

race what means have we for checking such unjust discriminations? Colored men of Hartford, let them

think  before acting. They wanted to put a stop to what was going on such as burning the houses,

shooting the wives and children and raping the daughters and mothers. Therefore they wanted

protection for the loss of ten thousands negroes who had been lynched and butchered and slaughtered

since the civil war. In the Triangle Fire video it was one scene that made me very sad and disappointed.

That scene was the women jumping out the window just killing themselves, knowing that was the only

way out. The fire was spreading so fast. Also, some of the women were either holding hands or hugging

while jumping from the window. I say the video in general was very sad to watch because seeing

nobody went over protocol when something like that happens and also seeing them panic and not know

what to do is just crazy.

    1. Thank you for talking about the African American soldiers that fought in the Spanish and Philippine American Wars. While it is much more common now to hear of stories of African Americans as more prominent figures in the military throughout Americas history. There was a time when that was not the case and I think you told a great story about those men.

  3. Nice reflection! You shined light on some things that people are afraid to speak about. I think some black men were enthusiastic about enlisting because they wanted to show the world that they were capable of serving for the government like white citizens. I agree, that scene from the Triangle Fire was very tough to watch. It's sad that people had to risk jumping from the window to escape the burning building.

  4. Hi Mari, I enjoyed learning about the historical background of African Americans that fought in Spanish and Filipino American wars. I thought it was engaging how you added, "No colored man should never again offer his services to protect a government that does not protect him." I felt this so strongly, especially with everything going on now, the government owns no part of us. It makes me so upset, how we practically built the foundation of this world, and don't even have them behind us to support us.
