Module 3 Reflection : Andrew Carnegie's Gospel of Wealth (June 1889
Andrew Carnegie, the American Steel titan, explains his vision for the proper role of wealth in
American society.
The conditions of human life have not only been changed, but revolutionized, within the past few
hundred years. In former days there was little difference between the dwelling, dress, food and
environment. Without wealth there can be no Maecenas. Neither master nor servant was as well situated
then as today. The price which society pays for the law of competition, like the price it pays for cheap
comforts and luxuries , is also great, but the advantages of this law are also greater. The laws of
accumulation should be left free; the laws of distribution free. The best in minds have reached a stage in
the development of the race in which it is clearly seen that there is no mode of disposing. The American
Dream is basically '' the ideal by which equality of opportunity is available to any American'' which I
don't believe is true. In my opinion the American Dream is not valid, because the inequality between
the rich and poor in America is still growing. Therefore the American Dream is not valid its just there.
We still need change in the world and I don't that will ever happen with what's going on in the world.

Your study of Andrew Carnegie, the American Steel titan, is a very good topic to discuss. He was very known for his wealth in America. This topic will also give me great insight into the steps he took to further his wealth in America.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely agree with this. America sets us up to work as the countries game pieces. In my eyes, I really think school doesn’t even teach you to own your own. It’s build for us to help make the world go around. I feel as if they should help us regulate our money and focus on building our own brand and not working for somebody else for the rest of our life.
ReplyDeleteHi Mari, I actually did my blog post on Carnegie's Gospel of Wealth reading as well! You should definitely read it, so we can compare more of our ideas. I discussed a little bit about the basis of Carnegie's ideology in his efforts to bridge the gap between the rich and poor by holding the wealthy responsible for the improvements of the economy. I enjoyed your recollection of his reading, and agree with your idea that rich and poor communities in America continue to grow which primarily sets up the gap between the rich and poor.
